Deaf Olympic Weightlifter
Terrance’s first sport had absolutely nothing to do with weightlifting. He grew up as a swimmer, a runner, basketball player and excelled in the sports. In high school, he played basketball and ran cross country and track where he has excelled. After high school, he received college athletic scholarships in basketball, cross country and track. He was also on a karate and wrestling team for a NCAA Division I school and has received numerous awards. After college, he took up bodybuilding and ended up becoming a manager and trainer for a professional athlete who then became an NPC Bodybuilding champion and American Gladiator.
Years later, he moved to the east coast and there he decided to go back to school for another degree where he attended an NCAA Division III school and was on the wrestling and crew team. While training he was offered a job as a personal trainer and it was then he was asked to become the assistant wrestling coach for deaf athletes and one of them was a new wrestler named, Matt “The Hammer” Hamill, who later became a three-time NCAA Division III National Champion.
After college, he got married and moved back west and lifted weights when he could. As the years went by he realized he missed the sports and competition that helped him physically and mentally in all aspects of his life. Terrance has remarkable physical strength from when he started weight training as a bodybuilder so he decided to get back into weightlifting again. He wanted to join a powerlifting team and after much research he came upon a team called PRAXIS. He checked it out and found it was an Olympic weightlifting team and decided to try out the sport. He started lifting in the summer of 2010 with Team Praxis and is coached by Mike Carroll who is a certified Olympic-style weightlifting coach and has been a strength coach for over 10 years. Terrance holds the Utah state record holder for snatch, clean and jerk, and total (Master Men - 56kg and 62kg); the Utah State Champion 2011 & 2012 and the Utah Summer Games 2011& 2012 – Gold medalist.
